Nevertheless, it’s refreshing to see this type of potentially disruptive innovation, even at a concept level, as we exit 2021. Obvious questions still exist around battery life, video and audio performance, as well as price.

But kudos to Dell for having the courage to publicly show off something as potentially disruptive as Concept Pari. That said, Concept Pari is just a prototype, and it may never see the light of day.

Webcams are one of the few remaining legacy accessories that largely have not gone “wireless,” though advances in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth have cleared the path for a high-quality connectivity experience. It’s exciting that Dell is applying this type of innovation to a category starving for something as paradigm-changing as this new approach. A future Dell monitor lineup with the necessary magnetic screen capability to attach this mobile webcam could be quite appealing to a vast number of corporate and work-from-home users. (Putting the considerable workflow benefits aside, Dell’s long-time strategy to market peripherals with high-attach rate accessories could be in play here. The prototype also includes a power indicator, a vertical indicator light to ensure ideal alignment and an integrated USB-C dock for wireless charging.ĭell's Concept Pari in its charging stand above a monitor SOURCE: Dell Inc.

It also includes a microphone and can support 1080p video via Wi-Fi. In photographs shown during the Dell briefing, the camera appears small (less than a half-dollar in diameter) and light (approximately 1 ounce). The immediate benefits are apparent: users can make direct eye contact with people they are speaking to during the call. The wireless camera can be positioned directly on compatible screens via magnet technology, in a charging dock or even in your hand. In that spirit, Concept Pari appears to be a breakthrough solution.Īt its core, Concept Pari is a cunningly ingenuous, moveable webcam that brings together intuitively natural experiences and collaborative user work models. Any workable solution must be flexible, simple and aesthetically elegant that doesn’t feel gimmicky. Concept Pari could change all of this.ĭell engineers studied camera placement to pursue an approach that could facilitate more useful human interaction. Moreover, teleprompter-like functionality (critical for podcasts) is nearly impossible to implement with a standalone webcam or laptop with an embedded camera.

Dell (thankfully) corrected that problem with its 2019 (and future) laptop models.Īnyone who watches cable news programs for any period of time can attest to less than professional interview experiences where the laptop camera used creates an awkward, eye contact-free effect. Before 2019, Dell’s XPS 13 lineup had the webcam embedded below the screen, creating an unflattering “up the nose” angle that made an otherwise terrific notebook experience for video conferencing calls less than ideal.

While laptop manufacturers have taken note over the last 24 months and are slowly increasing the cameras' resolution to enhance video quality, the location of the cameras (typically right above the laptop panel) can create an undesirable effect. Webcams, either standalone or laptop-embedded, are the technology most users take for granted but have a considerable impact on overall productivity, especially in the pandemic-fueled remote working environment that we all find ourselves in today. The webcam category is ripe for innovation and disruption.
